PAHALGAM

Pahalgam also known as the 'village of shepherds' is a town in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is a popular tourist destination and hill station. Its lush green meadows and pristine waters attract thousands of tourists from all over the world each year. It is located 45 kilometres (28 mi) from Anantnag on the banks of Lidder River at an altitude of 7,200 feet (2,200 m). Pahalgam is associated with the annual pilgrimage to the shrine Amarnath Yatra. The town is the starting point of the yatra that takes place every year in the months of July–August, receiving hundreds of thousands of pilgrims.

The name means the ‘Meadow of Flowers’. Popular as a skiing destination in India at an altitude of 14000ft, the place is frequented by die-hard adventure lovers for the thrill of a panoramic view of the mountainous landscape from the world’s highest ropeway covering a mid-air distance of almost 5 kms. Snowfall is quite common even in the summer months while in winters the place is generally closed for tourists due to heavy snowfall.

The word in the local language means the meadow of Gold. It is also called the Jannat or the heaven on Earth. Due to heavy snowfall the place is closed for tourists during the winters. It is the base for the Hindu pilgrimage of Amarnath. Treks, Zorbing, and river rafting are some activities to indulge in here.

    The right time to visit this valley is from March till May as the weather is quite pleasant during this time.
  • How can I reach Kashmir by air?
    Srinagar has an airport and is well-connected by premier airlines from all the major cities of India. To move to other towns and cities in Kashmir, one then needs to book taxis from the airport.
  • Is it possible to reach Kashmir by road?
    Yes, it is. You can drive down from Jammu or New Delhi. Jammu to Srinagar is about 302 kms and takes about 8 hours to reach by car. If going by road from New Delhi, you need to reach Jammu first which takes about 12 hours for 643 kms. You will have to halt at night at least once while travelling by road.
  • Can Kashmir be reached by train?
    The nearest railway station to Srinagar is the Jammu Tawi Railway station. The New Delhi- Jammu Tawi Rajdhani and Jammu Tawi Express is a prominent train from the capital of India. From the station one can book taxis or take a bus to reach Srinagar.
